Targets

    • Matrix Ransomware

      Targeted ransomware with information collection and encryption functionality.

    • Matrix family

    • Modifies visibility of file extensions in Explorer

    • Modifies boot configuration data using bcdedit

    • Boot or Logon Autostart Execution: Active Setup

      Adversaries may achieve persistence by adding a Registry key to the Active Setup of the local machine.

    • Command and Scripting Interpreter: PowerShell

      Using powershell.exe command.

    • Downloads MZ/PE file

    • Event Triggered Execution: Image File Execution Options Injection

    • Possible privilege escalation attempt

    • Disables automatic submission of suspicious files to Microsoft by Windows Defender

      Uses the Powershell Set-MpPreference cmdlet to prevent Windows Defender from automatically sending files to Microsoft for analysis.

    • Event Triggered Execution: Component Object Model Hijacking

      Adversaries may establish persistence by executing malicious content triggered by hijacked references to Component Object Model (COM) objects.

    • Executes dropped EXE

    • Loads dropped DLL

    • Modifies file permissions

    • Modifies system executable filetype association

    • Reads user/profile data of web browsers

      Infostealers often target stored browser data, which can include saved credentials etc.

    • Stops running service(s)

    • Adds Run key to start application

    • Enumerates connected drives

      Attempts to read the root path of hard drives other than the default C: drive.

    • File and Directory Permissions Modification: Windows File and Directory Permissions Modification

    • Installs/modifies Browser Helper Object

      BHOs are DLL modules which act as plugins for Internet Explorer.

    • Legitimate hosting services abused for malware hosting/C2

    • Maps connected drives based on registry

      Disk information is often read in order to detect sandboxing environments.

    • Power Settings

      powercfg controls all configurable power system settings on a Windows system and can be abused to prevent an infected host from locking or shutting down.

    • Remote Services: SMB/Windows Admin Shares

      Adversaries may use Valid Accounts to interact with a remote network share using Server Message Block (SMB).

    • Drops file in System32 directory

    • Sets desktop wallpaper using registry
