    • Windows security bypass

    • Deletes shadow copies

      Ransomware often targets backup files to inhibit system recovery.

    • Modifies boot configuration data using bcdedit

    • Command and Scripting Interpreter: PowerShell

      Using powershell.exe command.

    • Deletes backup catalog

      Uses wbadmin.exe to inhibit system recovery.

    • Disables Task Manager via registry modification

    • Downloads MZ/PE file

    • Checks computer location settings

      Looks up country code configured in the registry, likely geofence.

    • Creates a file in the Startup directory

      A file was written to a Windows startup folder. Files in these directories are executed automatically when a user logs on or an application initializes.

    • Executes dropped EXE

    • Loads dropped DLL

    • Prevents Microsoft Defender from scanning certain paths by adding an exclusion.

      Uses the Powershell Add-MpPreference cmdlet to exclude paths from being scanned by Microsoft Defender.

    • Reads user/profile data of local email clients

      Email clients store some user data on disk where infostealers will often target it.

    • Reads user/profile data of web browsers

      Infostealers often target stored browser data, which can include saved credentials etc.

    • System Binary Proxy Execution: Rundll32

      Abuse Rundll32 to proxy execution of malicious code.

      Windows that would typically be displayed when an application carries out an operation can be hidden.

    • Looks up external IP address via web service

      Uses a legitimate IP lookup service to find the infected system's external IP.

    • Obfuscated Files or Information: Command Obfuscation

      Adversaries may obfuscate content during command execution to impede detection.

    • Writes to the Master Boot Record (MBR)

      Bootkits write to the MBR to gain persistence at a level below the operating system.

    • Executes a VBScript file via the Windows Script Host.

    • Sets desktop wallpaper using registry

    • UPX packed file

      Detects executables packed with UPX/modified UPX open source packer.
